Why do 妈 (mā) and 马 (mǎ) sound so different to Chinese speakers?
Great question! In Mandarin, tones aren't decoration — they change the meaning entirely. 妈 (mā, high flat tone) means 'mother,' while 马 (mǎ, dipping tone) means 'horse.' To Chinese speakers, these sound as different as 'bat' and 'bet' do to English speakers.
